Former Pension Boards, United Church Funds CIO George Doty passes

GeorgeDoty.jpgThe former chief investment officer for the Pension Boards-United Church of Christ, Inc. and United Church Funds is being remembered by colleagues for his wisdom, guidance and leadership. George Doty III died on Thursday, Feb. 16, at age 81 in Sarasota, Fla.

Doty served as chief investment officer with the Pension Boards and UCF from 1992 until his retirement in 2006. In his long financial career, he spent 40 years with banks, insurance companies, brokerage firms and charitable institutions.

Brian R. Bodager, president and CEO of PBUCC, said, “Those who had the privilege of working with George over the years remember him as a cherished colleague committed to the financial well-being of Pension Boards members. The Board of Trustees and staff mourn his loss, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family.”

Dan Carwile, immediate past Chair of PBUCC’s Board of Trustees, added, “George was a wonderful investment professional, and a gentleman. We were fortunate to have a staff person of his caliber.”

Current PBUCC Board Chair Rev. Rodney Franklin described Mr. Doty as “a very dedicated and approachable steward,” adding, “I had the chance to engage him while a member of the Investment Committee of the UCC Board for World Ministries. He always took the appropriate amount of time to answer questions and provide financial guidance. We are ever grateful for his patience and leadership.”

UCF President Donald G. Hart described Doty as “a friend to everyone and would go out of his way to help others. To me, George was not only a close friend, he was also a mentor from whom I learned much about the work I do for UCF. I will truly miss him.”

Born in Barrington, Ill., in 1935, Doty received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Yale University and his MBA in finance from the University of Chicago. As a long-time UCC member, his interests included researching his family genealogy, cooking, gardening, and teaching Sunday School.

Doty was preceded in death by his wife, Cynthia, in 2000. He is survived by his three children, Barbara, George and Caroline, and four grandchildren, Jacob, Claire, Madelyn and Jack.
