Renewing our lives in Advent!

The season of Advent and Christmas is full of lights, colors, festivities, energy and enthusiasm everywhere. It is a time where it seems that all our emotions are felt more intensely, the happiness and the sadness. And it is in this special time of the year that once again we have the opportunity to reflect on our lives, on our relationship with others, with creation, and in on our relationship with God.

For years, for me Christmas was a time of nostalgia because I was away from my parents and siblings, from my friends, from my country and culture. Christmas in the United States did not feel like Christmas. Christmas felt empty, cold, without the Christmas carols, joy, and traditional foods of my country, and above all, I longed for the warmth of the tender hugs of my loved ones.

When I migrated to the United States, my life was focused on working, following a goal of progressing economically in a good job, however, my daily work did not give me the internal satisfaction that filled my heart with joy.

I have always had the certainty that God sends angels that guide our paths and thus, people and signs came into my life that would encourage me to change, would impulse me to make the transition from living for myself to living to honor God by serving others, and this would bring me incomparable harmony, joy and peace.

The change was possible because I found a Christian community, the Cathedral of Hope UCC, an inclusive and progressive church, that welcomed me without conditions and allowed me to put myself at the service of others. I took the risk of leaving the comfort of being centered in myself to allow the virtues of vulnerability to act, through which we learn and grow with others, enriching us with our differences and strengthen us with our similarities.

Now, intentionally, valuing who I am – a Latin woman who aim to be a better Christian – I use my Hispanic heritage to build bridges of solidarity between people of different cultures, putting our most worthy values ​​at the service of unconditional love, love without borders.

Now, at the beginning of the Christmas season I look forward to renew my desire to know what it means to see Jesus on each face. I renew my interest in discovering what it means to live in God, always and everywhere. It fills me with joy to be able to serve, hug and give love to all people, to those of my family of blood and chosen, to the people of my church, to those in the street, or to those who wait on the border between Mexico and the United States for a change in immigration status and for the opportunity to have a safe and dignified life.

If we are certain that God hears our prayers and acts in his own time and manner, then we will know that our actions of love, justice and peace will have a multiplier effect, we will know that our actions are in tune with Christ’s mandate to promote the God’s unconditional love for all.

It is my prayer that all people who read these words are touched by the Holy Spirit and that our lives are renewed by recognizing the incarnate God, Christ, on every human face. It is my prayer that we use our talents and virtues to act in solidarity especially with those most in need. It is my prayer that we have the courage to take new risks of loving everyone, always and everywhere, for and for the good of all and for the eternal glory of God, God of many names, God of light, God of truth, God of justice, God of peace, God of joy, God of inclusion, God of diversity, God of love without limits, God eternally faithful, God always and in everything, and is our God. May it be so, amen.

¡Renovando Nuestras Vidas en Adviento!

La temporada de Adviento y Navidad está llena de luces, colores, festividades, y energía y entusiasmo esta por doquier. Es una época donde parece que todas nuestras emociones se sienten más intensamente, las alegres y las tristes. Y es en esta época tan especial de año que tenemos nuevamente la oportunidad de reflexionar sobre nuestras vidas, sobre nuestra relación con los demás, con la creación, y con nuestra relación con Dios.  

Por años, para mí la navidad fue una época de nostalgia pues me había distanciado físicamente de mis padres y hermanos, de mis amigos, de mi país y cultura. La navidad en Estados Unidos no se sentía como navidad. La navidad se sentía vacía, fría, sin los villancicos, la alegría, y las comidas tradicionales de mi país, y sobre todo añoraba la calidez de los abrazos tiernos de mis seres queridos.

Al migrar a los Estados Unidos mi vida estaba concentrada en trabajar, siguiendo una meta de progresar económicamente en un buen trabajo más, sin embargo, mi quehacer cotidiano no me daba la satisfacción interna que llenara mi corazón de alegría.

Siempre he tenido la certeza de que Dios envía ángeles que guían nuestros pasos y así, llegaron a mi vida personas y señales que me animarían al cambio, me impulsarían a hacer la transición de vivir para mí misma a vivir para honrar a Dios al servir a los demás, y esto me traería armonía, alegría y paz incomparables.

El cambio fue posible porque encontré una comunidad cristiana, la Catedral de la Esperanza UCC, iglesia inclusiva y progresiva, que me doy la bienvenida sin condiciones y me permitió ponerme al servicio de los demás. Yo tome el riesgo de dejar la comodidad de estar centrada en mí misma y darle paso a las virtudes de la vulnerabilidad a través de la cual aprendemos y crecemos con los demás, enriqueciéndonos con nuestras diferencias y solidificándonos con nuestras similitudes.

Ahora, intencionalmente, valorando quien soy -una mujer latina que anhela cada día ser mejor cristiana-uso mi herencia hispana para construir puentes de solidaridad entre las personas de diferentes culturas, poniendo nuestros mas dignos valores al servicio del amor sin condición, del amor sin fronteras. 

Ahora, al iniciar la época de la Navidad renuevo con anhelo mi deseo de saber lo que significa ver a Jesús en cada rostro. Renuevo mi interés en descubrir lo representa vivir en Dios, siempre y en todo lugar. Me llena de alegría poder servir, abrazar y dar amor a todas las personas, a las de mi familia de sangre y elegida, a las personas de mi iglesia, a las de la calle, o a quienes esperan en la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos por un cambio de estatus migratorio y por la oportunidad de una vida segura y digna.

Si tenemos la certeza de que Dios escucha nuestras oraciones y actúa en su tiempo y a su manera, entonces sabremos que nuestras acciones de amor, justicia y paz tendrán un efecto multiplicador, sabremos que nuestras acciones están en sintonía con el mandato de Cristo de promover el amor incondicional de Dios para todos.

Es mi oración que todas las personas que leen están palabras sean tocadas por el Espíritu Santo y que nuestras vidas sean renovadas al reconocer a Dios encarnado, a Cristo, en cada rostro humano. Es mi oración que usemos nuestros talentos y virtudes para actuar en solidaridad sobre todo con los más necesitados. Es mi oración que tengamos la valentía de tomar nuevos riesgos de amar a todos, siempre y en todo lugar, por y para el bien de todos y para la eterna gloria de Dios, Dios de muchos nombres, Dios de luz, Dios de verdad, Dios de justicia, Dios de paz, Dios de alegría, Dios de inclusión, Dios de diversidad, Dios de amor sin límites, Dios eternamente fiel, Dios siempre y en todo, y es nuestro Dios. Que así sea, amen.

Yinessa Romero is a licensed minister at Cathedral of Hope for the Latinx congregation. She is completing her master in Divinity program from Chicago Theological Seminary and has an active participation in several ministries of the church and Dallas Hope Charities. She holds a Certificate in Theology from Pacific School of Religion, has an MBA and a BS in Economics from recognized schools in the Dominican Republic. She lives in Corinth, TX, she has two children and she is in a committed relationship with a woman who has three children and four grandchildren.
