On June 19, 1865 in Galveston, Texas, a U.S. federal proclamation was read notifying people of African Descent were all free and that slavery was abolished. This date has since been commemorated as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day and/or Emancipation Day. The earliest Juneteenth celebration being recorded in 1867.
